  R1. REFLECTIONS

Reflections on the VDT screen caused by fluorescent light sources as well as reflections from the operator's face and clothing often make text and graphics difficult to read/view. This causes operators to use eye muscles more than necessary, leading to eye strain.

  '3. LUMINOUS TRANSMITTANCE

Luminous transmittance represents the ratio between the amount of light absorbed when it passes the filter and that which is not absorbed. The darker the filter colour, the greater reduction of screen glare, but too dark a screen may reduce visibility. The lighter the screen, the less contrast, and this also reduces visibility. Generally a luminous transmittance of about 50% provides the most visibility.

  N5. STATIC ELECTRICITY

Static electricity is a form of electricity that attracts objects.

As cathode ray tubes (CRTs) are subject to high voltages, they often generate 10,000 to 30,000 Volts of static electricity, attracting anodic dust and dirt particles in the air toward the CRT. Static electricity causes various problems such as :

1. Reduced visibility as dust and dirt particles are attracted and deposited onto the CRT screen.

2. Cathodic dust and dirt particles are also repelled, annoying or irritating the operator. This may also injure the corneas of the operator's eyes.

3. Static electricity produces electrical interference and noise components which can reduce electronic peripheral equipment performance, even causing data loss or equipment malfunction in the worst cases.
